The 16th match of 2019 World Cup between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was abandoned due to rain without a ball bowled, with both teams taking a point each. This is the third 2019 World Cup match to be abandoned and second involving Sri Lanka. Notably, only one match each was abandoned in the previous two World Cup editions.
Rain is always an unwanted guest for the cricket matches. For a mega tournament like World Cup it will change the complexion of the matches and even the fortunes of the teams can be changed. This World Cup will be left in history as a rain prone one for sure. Till now three matches were washed out by rain.
Among them, apart from today’s game, yesterday’s South Africa vs West Indies match and Pakistan vs Sri Lanka match were abandoned without a ball bowled. The match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka was all hit by rain but fortunately it lasted long as DLS method came into play. Srilanka is the most affected team by the rain so far.
Yesterday, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has said that washout game against the Windies was better than a rain-shortened match. “The further the game goes, the closer to a T20 game, being two down already, the odds are heavily in their favour,” Du Plessis added. South Africa got their first point of the World Cup 2019 after the abandoned match.
