The players of Afghanistan gave a great fight against India in a must win match to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Winning toss first, Kohli chose to bat being deceived by the Sun shade and moisture on the pitch.
It took no time for him to realise his mistake as in-form Rohit was bowled by Mujeeb. Then came Virat to attack the Afghan spinners right form the beginning. On the other side Rahul fell for a false shot who looked all set for a 53 balls 30.
But the skipper went on playing to score his third consecutive half-century in the Wold Cup. Later Nabi got rid of Kohli as extra bounce does the trick departing Indian skipper for a brilliant 67 from just 63 balls.
There after Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav failed to accelerate the innings. Jadhav scored his half century just before falling on the penultimate delivery of the innings. Even Pandya’s efforts at last went in vain settling India to 224 runs.
Afghan chasing a moderate total on a tricky pitch got off to a bad start as shami rattled the stumps of Hazarthulla Zazai who was really struggling. Rahmat Shah and captain Gulabdin Naib has shown some resistance scoring 44 runs for the second wicket.
After their skipper skied Pandya’s bouncer, Bumrah got rid of settled Shah and Shahid in the span of three deliveries to put India back in the game. Then came experienced Mohammad Nabi battling hard while wickets kept tumbling on the other side.
Bumrah and Shami bowled brilliantly at death and Afghan needed 16 runs off the final over with Nabi in crease. It was one shot too many for a batsman like Nabi who was caught at long-on for a well played 52. In the next two deliveries, Mohammad Shami bowled Aftab and Mujeeb to register a World Cup Hat-trick and had become the 2nd Indian to do so after Chetan Sharna.
Jasprit Bumrah was awarded ‘Man of the Match’ for his brilliant bowling at crucial junctures and India will face. With this defeat, Afghanistan were out of the tournament and India, who are yet to be defeated will face West Indies on 27th June.
